Name: Wyzowl (Or Matt to my friends!)
On Visually: Wyzowl
In Design: 8 years
1. Tell us a bit about yourself: how did you get into design, and how long have you been doing it?
I set up our main company 4040 Media in 2009 to help businesses communicate their messages more effectively through websites, email marketing and design. Before this, I was a Marketing Manager at a number of companies in various industries. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial flair and knew I would set up on my own one day.
A couple of years later I saw a big shift in the market towards video so I set up Wyzowl to service that market, transferring my design skills over to the video arena. Since then we have grown our team through double figures and work with some amazing customers in over 20 countries around the world.
We now have a number of video brands including Wyzowl, Sketcha and Cliqvid.
2. In 7 words or less, describe your style.
Our style is clean, simple and modern. However we try not to let our style dictate what customers want too much. Instead we take the customers vision and apply our own ideas along with good design principles. This means that our videos don’t all look the same and we can be fairly broad in the end result we can offer our customers.
3. If you could take a seminar with one designer or artist, dead or living, who would that be? Why?
Jony Ive, this may be a bit of a cliché, however I truly believe that he is gifted for designing so many iterations of a product that inspire millions and push the boundaries of what has been done before in terms of functionality and style.
4. What’s your favorite color? Why?
Blue, it works in so many ways.
5. What is the biggest mistake you’ve made in your work and what did you learn from it?
I have made many mistakes. I try a lot of new business ideas, test things out and only a few work but I think it’s those few that make you a good business person. If you don’t try you won’t succeed. I don’t let failures get me down, I simply concentrate on what works and try out another idea when it next comes up.
I tried to start a video brand from a love of design when I saw a gap in the market. We now have a business that has created over 500 videos for people all over the world. That’s the excitement of business.
6. What about your biggest achievement? Tell us about the project you are most proud of in your career so far.
Starting and growing our video brand Wyzowl. Like I said in the comment above, Wyzowl was started to fill a gap in the market. Nobody was making good quality mobile app videos that developers could afford so I started Wyzowl to fill this gap. We now create mobile, web and animated videos.
7. Who should we feature in this space next?
Well, we have another video brand called Sketcha that we’ve just launched. It’s got a cute Godzilla character in the video, would that swing it?!
