Meetup: The Skills to Design Great Data Visualizations

by Aleksandra Todorova 2 years ago Filed Under: Updates

At Visual.ly, we believe that if creating great designs takes talent and creativity, creating great infographics and data visualizations takes talent, creativity, and then some. Those extra skills (we consider them superpowers) were the topic of discussion at our latest Meetup.

Nearly 200 designers, engineers and data visualization geeks gathered at the Wix Lounge in San Francisco for some pizza and beer, networking and presentations from Sofya Yampolsky, UX designer at American Efficient, and the designer behind Visual.ly’s hugely popular What are the Odds? infographic (1.2 million and counting views in less than two months!); Juan Alvarez, senior UI engineer at Intuit and the superhero behind Mint’s iPhone and iPad apps, and Visual.ly’s own Creative Director Nate Whitson.

If you couldn’t be there and want to see for yourself what our presenters had to show and tell us, check out their presentations below.

Juan Alvarez’s “badass” presentation (no, really!):

As for Nate Whitson’s part, we had the honor of viewing his yet-unfinished video on the revival of beer breweries in the United States. Below is a simple screenshot; look out for the video release in early 2012!
