These how-to documents are notorious for stopping the casual hobbyist, dabbler, or total novice in her tracks. Like with other types of infographics, the name of the game for a how-to is accessibility. When a complex task is clearly laid out, explained and illustrated, even the inexperienced feel like anything’s possible. Here are some helpful, hilarious, and unexpected how-to infographics.

How to Focus

In the digital age, distractions abound. A workday is spent fielding communications from every direction: text messages, phone calls, Facebook, Twitter, Skype video chats, and emails. It’s a wonder anything gets done, ever. But it does. Human beings are adaptable creatures. Still, the endless data stream gets the best of almost everyone now and then. Some seek medication to help hone focus. Others turn to self-help books on meditation or breath awareness. The “How to Focus Mind Map” (below) suggests drug-free habits and rituals for managing an overwhelming life of distraction.

How To Turn Your Hobby Into a Business

Millions of people spend their days daydreaming. They imagine time spent farming, making model airplanes, skydiving, or traveling. For many of these unfulfilled workers, a career doing what they love is possible, with some focused hard work. The infographic below suggests 10 steps for researching, preparing, and launching a viable business. Forbes estimates the total number of U.S. entrepreneurs at 11.5 million. Why not make it 11.5 million and one?

How to Build a Chicken Coop

The market for locally-grown, free-range, antibiotic-free, organic food is booming. Not only that, but many people are deciding to take healthy nutrition into their own hands, feeding their families the old-fashioned way: with gardens and animals. This trend isn’t just a phenomenon of the rural countryside with its open space and fertile soil, it’s happening in many densely populated urban areas too.

When it comes to animals, chickens are particularly popular. They’re small, cheap to feed and don’t require much in the way of space. But those interested in raising them face an engineering hurdle: building a coop in their backyard. The handy infographic below illustrates an easy $300, 3-4 day coop-building project from start to finish. It’s clearly laid out and illustrated, and short enough to keep nervous first-timers interested.

How to Spot a Hidden Handgun

In the movies, the bad guys are always carrying guns. In real life, there are increasing numbers of law-abiding, licensed gun owners with permits to carry. Identifying a gun carrier when you see one might help you avoid trouble, make you feel safer… or prompt you to get as far from the gun owner as possible. In any event, here’s an infographic that teaches you how to spot a hidden gun.

There’s something about that undead craving for brains that just makes for compelling entertainment. It’s the age-old struggle for survival; for protecting that precious thing the undead lose: their humanity. Just for the fun of it, imagine zombies are real. A viral outbreak brings on World War Z and you’re holed up in a second floor apartment with a baseball bat. What do you do? Where do you go?
Alongside arrests, deaths, scandals, and fashion don’ts, celebrity relationships are the main ingredient of good Hollywood gossip. When these relationships succeed, the public delights in the excesses, the cute vacation pictures, and the romance. When they fail, the public delights in the fights, the cheating, the settlement agreements, and the love children. For the public, it’s a win-win. For the celebrities, well, it’s just part of the job. Here are some entertaining celebrity relationship infographics to put all that high profile love and loss into perspective.

The Rules of Celebrity Dating

When you’re a celebrity, dating can be a challenge. You can’t just go out on the town and expect to find normal, healthy, well-adjusted people interested in a regular relationship. With the paparazzi hot on your tail and a face every American would recognize, no casual date goes unnoticed (and most reasonable potential suitors run screaming for the Hollywood Hills). So, many celebrities end up dating other celebrities: people who know what it’s like to live in the public eye, and who don’t mind the fracas. But who will end up with whom? Is there a method to this madness? Predicting the whims of Tinseltown’s citizens is one of the tabloids’ favorite games. Here’s a visualization that does just that.

The Royal Wedding vs. Normal Weddings: Comparing the Costs

For the observers, the best part about a celebrity love affair is the outrageously lavish wedding. Sure, there are a few celebrities who sneak off in secret to get married on a camera-free beach somewhere, but that’s clearly the exception to the rule. If you have to live in the limelight, you might as well make the most of it! And if you’re a celebrity who also happens to be heir apparent to the crown, well, consider opulence guaranteed. True to form, one of the most excessive, glamorous, and well publicized weddings in recent years was that of Prince William of Wales and Kate Middleton. The cash register chimes surrounding this high society affair practically drowned out the roar of the sun’s nuclear furnace. The infographic below compares the cost of the royal wedding to the cost of an average person’s marriage celebration.

The Most Stylish Celebrity Brides

Speaking of weddings, for those interested in emulating a celebrity bridal trend, look no further than this infographic. Learn all about the ensembles of five famous brides, including information on diamonds, designers, dress styles, and cost.

The Shortest Celebrity Marriages

Celebrating celebrity marriages that work is much less exciting than tittering over the ones that don’t. This short infographic lines up couples that couldn’t go the distance (all of them split in under a year). Note Rudolph Valentino and Jean Acker’s record-breaking ¼ day marriage. Only in Hollywood.

Celebrity Breakups on Twitter

Breaking up is often painful. It’s not something most people feel like chatting about publicly, especially when the breakup is new. But like it or not, if you’re a celebrity you’d better be prepared for your fans to share their unsolicited thoughts on your personal breakup business. And what better venue for rapid-fire gossip than Twitter? Twitter is known for breaking news (and breakup news, as it were). The infographic below examines trending breakups from 2011 and 2012.

Notorious Celeb Divorces of 2011

2011 was a big year for high profile celebrity divorces. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver split amidst extreme scandal: an illicit affair, a love child, and a history of the kind of inappropriateness Monday morning quarterbacks live for. Kim Kardashian’s five-second marriage to Chris Humphries cost $10 million (and whatever didn’t remain of her dignity). And the salacious and strange bond between Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher crumbled into so much stardust before the paparazzi’s very eyes.

The Weird World of Celebrity Divorce

Another ode to celebrity divorce, this infographic explores the details: settlements, weird negotiation requests, the longest and shortest marriages, and the repeat offenders. Note Rupert and Anna Murdoch’s $1.7 billion dollar settlement. (Yes, that’s billion with a b).

Soon-to-be parents often find themselves completely overwhelmed by the sheer volume of available information. Daunted by advice from doctors, friends, family, schools, magazines, and the 10,000+ baby books on the market, parents and parents-to-be are increasingly turning to the Internet for quick information on-demand. Unfortunately, that information is inconsistent, unpredictable, and often alarmist. Even if you’re an expert vetter, anxieties about pregnancy and prenatal care, or a baby’s development and health, often outweigh logic. And in the midst of the hormonal roller coaster of pregnancy, or the infamous emotionally harried, sleep-deprived, new baby stupor, anxiety is king. But take heart: good, well-researched, digestible data is out there – presented in attractive, narrative form for busy moms and dads. Here are some of Visual.ly’s best and most fun baby-related data visualizations that won’t inspire red-eyed 2 AM panic attacks. The Path to a Healthy Pregnancy Congratulations, you’re pregnant!

The Path to a Healthy Pregnancy

Congratulations, you’re pregnant! Now what? Taking care of the baby begins immediately with prenatal vitamins, doctor visits, good nutrition, exercise, and planning for the future. The course is long and the responsibilities many. This helpful guide provides an outline for care including information on prenatal testing, safety, nutrition, baby shower registries, and when to start birthing classes. It isn’t comprehensive, but it’s a great place to start learning.

Pregnancy Week by Week

Pregnancy can be one of the most transformative and exciting experiences there is. But it can also be mysterious and frightening, especially if you don’t know much about how the process unfolds. The infographic below follows a baby’s growth through the 40 weeks of pregnancy. It’s fun and informative without clinical language, so the non-scientifically inclined will find it accessible. Like many of the most popular baby websites, the authors of this image felt the urge to compare baby size to various fruits and vegetables. This is a strange trend, but probably helps some parents conceptualize height and weight.

Birth Settings in the U.S.

While hospitals are still the most common places to have babies in the U.S., an increasing number of couples are deciding to have their babies in alternative settings like birth centers or at home. Conventional Western wisdom posits that a hospital is the safest place to give birth, but the science doesn’t always back that up. Birth centers are well equipped to handle emergencies, and allowing the birth process to unfold naturally reduces the need for interventions and surgeries. In a country with a 34% c-section rate and an infant and fetal mortality rate far above that of other developed countries, questioning conventional wisdom may not be such a bad thing. This infographic explores the statistics and introduces some information on alternatives to the traditional American birth model.

This interactive infographic helps parents document a child’s development. It includes spaces for information like the baby’s place of birth, height, weight, hair growth, motor skills, first Halloween costume, first words, family tree, wake and sleep cycles, and more. Unfortunately, this was a Kickstarter project that failed to receive enough funding.

Will Your Baby Be Super Smart?

Everyone wants a smart baby and products to create one abound (more on these below). But what really determines a baby’s intelligence, and how can you tell if you’ve got a gifted child?

America’s Billion Dollar Baby Scam

Speaking of creating genius babies, technology has dramatically changed the way parents raise children, and the way children develop and learn. Some of these new technological products are clearly helpful and effective, some are ineffective, and some may actually be counterproductive. For example, Disney’s “Baby Einstein” DVDs are owned by 1/3 of all parents in the U.S. even though the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against kids under two watching television.

In most cases, parents seem to be paying more for baby stuff, whether or not the stuff is worth the extra scratch (or really worth anything at all). Step aside helpful, healthy, smartly designed, affordable products: these babies are big business. The infographic below investigates popular baby products and trends, from formula to fancy strollers, debunking hopped-up claims along the way.

Celebrity Baby Names

And now for something completely frivolous. From Apple to Moon-Unit, Peaches Honeyblossom to Moxie CrimeFighter, celebrities are known for their, um, unusual baby name choices. Choosing a name is a huge responsibility, one that many parents fret over for countless hours. Feel good about your name by comparing it to some names nobody should feel good about.

Should I Text Him?

You met at a party or went on a date, exchanged numbers… and nothing. Or you have a secret crush who doesn’t know you exist. In all cases, texting feels like an easy and safe way to make contact. But is it really a good idea?
How Facebook Affects You and Your Relationships

A social network flirtation with a co-worker is going well. You cleverly emphasize your subtle subtext with a daring emoticon… then you realize your mom “liked” it. Facebook is a great way to find old friends, and old flames, but is it really helping people build successful relationships? And how does it influence your self-confidence and self-esteem (both important factors when it comes to love and sex)?

Gamers Get Girls

Matchmaking websites with compatibility algorithms are connecting thousands of hopeful singles. Online gaming sites with awesome graphics are connecting thousands of level 45 battle mages. While the dating sites boast focused singles seeking mates, the gaming sites have a whole lot more users (World of Warcraft has about 12 million users to eHarmony’s 1 million) who all have one very important thing in common: the game. If you’re skeptical, chew on this startling statistic: 74.7% of WoW players are dating someone else who plays.

Strangest Sex Laws

We’ve all heard about them – bizarre draconian laws that hearken back to a time when sex was feared and reviled. In most cases, the sex laws from the good old days are no longer enforced. They exist simply as vestiges of a quainter, simpler era. But in some cases, in some places, these laws still stand. Prepare to be amazed, disgusted, and shocked. You may even blush.

Should I Go Out With This Guy?

For many hopeful women, deciding whether or not to go on an actual date with an online acquaintance is an exercise in both terror and titillation: the excitement of the unknown; the possibility that he’s a serial-killer; the hope for a love connection; the obsession over every zit; and the late-night, red-eyed review of your own Photoshopped profile picture (you didn’t even look like that in college). Don’t fret, simply consult this helpful decision tree for the single girl.

Online Stalking: How to Google Your Way Out of Love

If there’s one thing Google is good for, it’s learning a whole lot about people you barely know. The Internet’s “paper” trail can be great, if your love interest is an accomplished academic with a history of fancy publications and no embarrassing social network accounts. Or, it can be terrible, if your love interest is active on LiveJournal, writes fan fiction, and considers herself Team Edward.

The STD Heat Map

Any discussion of love and sex in 2013 should include some mention of safety. After all, this isn’t 1971. Consider this overview of the state of STDs in America as a sex-ed style reminder about responsibility, lest any of you get carried away. Be careful out there, especially if you’re in Hawaii.

The Wedding Planning Checklist

So you met a girl on World of Warcraft, Google stalked her, text messaged, Facebooked, dated, and you’re ready for the next step. Congratulations! When’s the wedding? Weddings sound charming and quaint. They evoke images of flitting butterflies, soft rose petals, and the light tinkle of champagne flutes. In real life, weddings are some of the most stressful events imaginable. When it comes time to plan yours, the learning curve can be steep and the mistakes cliff precipitous. There are at least a million wedding websites that offer recommendations and checklists, apps and registries. The sheer volume of tips, tricks, and ultimate guides is enough to turn a frenetic planner apoplectic. Avoid the dark side of the big bad wedding obsessed Internet and stick with a simple and straight-forward checklist infographic, like the one below.

Why? For one, many TV shows have twisty plots or complicated relationships that just beg to be laid out in a beautiful design. Since television is visual by its very nature, the visual aspects of those infographics are already there — and in many cases, the fans would appreciate them for that alone. But most importantly, let’s not forget that designers and data visualization professionals are people too — and like most of us, they have their favorite TV shows. When you create an infographic about something you enjoy, love or even obsess about, you will design not only with knowledge, but with heart as well.

Here are nine such visualizations.

1. A Graphic Tribute to Game of Thrones

Just in time for the much-anticipated Season 3 premiere, Nigel Evan Dennis brings us this stunning interactive visualization that will tell you pretty much everything you want to know about the show’s characters – without giving away the saucy plot lines (you should watch the show to see those for yourself — and read the books, if you truly want to understand everything that’s going on). Each character is illustrated in a minimalist – but very true to life – design and classified according to their house and faith, and there is an interactive timeline (shown above) for the show’s fans to peruse. (Click on the image below to launch the interactive.)

2. The Supernatural Sprawl of True Blood

True Blood began as a love story between a vampire and a human telepath, with a bit of shifter sprinkled in. Then, with each new episode, more supernatural beings came into the mix: werewolves, werepanthers, demons, witches, mediums, ghosts… By Season 5, even the truest of Truebies could have easily lost count.

This visualization, aptly named The Supernatural Sprawl of True Blood, breaks down what type of creatures appeared in each single episode during the show’s first five seasons.

Santiago Ortiz is one of the data vis community’s most respected professionals. His amazing work includes Pleiades, which visualizes Twitter communities, and the 7 sets Venn Diagram: an interactive visualization of seven colors, mixed to create 128 combinations.

But most impressive — particularly to fans of the cult TV show LOST — is his Lostalgic: an interactive visualization of the script of LOST in its entirety; every single character, episode, even word. The visualization has several functionalities, including a matrix of characters (sized based on their lines in a particular episode), a graph that maps out character relationships and even a “reenactment” option that will take you through the script, line by line. There is so much to do and explore here, LOST fans can get lost in this interactive for hours.

4. Walking Dead Zombie Kills

Even those of us who don’t watch the Walking Dead know that this show is about zombies — and killings. The infographic below visualizes zombie kills — very tastefully, too.

5. Vampire Diaries: Surviving Death

The Vampire Diaries has a faithful following, overwhelmingly among the female demographic (especially teenagers and their moms). Luckily, infographic designer Michelle Calderon is a fan and created this visualization in the weeks leading up to the Season 4 premiere (the season is already under way).

6. Dexter’s Victims

Watching Dexter isn’t recommended if blood makes you squeamish. The killings are many, the blood is free-flowing. The infographic below, visualizing Dexter’s victims during the show’s first five seasons, should give you a pretty good idea of just how gory things can get:

7. Breaking Bad Periodic Table

“Periodic table” visualizations — other than the one created by Dmitri Mendeleev — are rarely successful and often downright cheesy. Hardly any data other than that in the Periodic Table of the Elements lends itself to a periodic table visualization.
8. Mad Drinkers

What do the men (and women) of Mad Men do? Why, they drink. The Mad Drinkers interactive visualization captures the spirit of the show perfectly:

9. Relationships in Gossip Girl

Finally, one just for fun. Remember Gossip Girl? If you never watched that show, here’s how it goes down: not much happens over the course of six seasons, other than every single one of the main characters dating everyone else. The infographic below captures that perfectly, with just the appropriate amount of simplicity:

Its name was inspired by Robert Kosara’s blog and online identity, eagereyes. Robert had this to say about the new blog:

“I’m flattered that somebody went to all that trouble to make a spoof version of my website. It looks quite similar, and the logo is very cleverly based on mine (with some tastefully added pie charts). Whoever did this clearly has some design skills (or at least is good with photoshop).

It’s also a sign that the visualization community is crossing a threshold in size and importance. Between Fake Edward Tufte (who hasn’t been active in a while), Fake Stephen Few, and now Eager Pies, we’re getting to the spoof level of a respectable community.

I hope that these Twitter accounts and the eagerpies website will stay active beyond April 1. We can certainly use some lighthearted commentary between all the serious discussions.”

Obviously an April Fools’ Day joke, the blog made quite a splash in the data vis community:

In any community, satire is a healthy thing. It shows the ability to self criticize that, at the most basic level, helps to keep people responsible and honest. At a deeper level it stems from a background rooted in science. Testing and evaluating everything is healthy in the long term.

We, too, hope that all of these accounts continue to produce satirical content. They help lighten the mood and build the community, and they certainly help keep the business of visualizing data fun.
